These animals are also called two-horned giraffes. They live in places like savannahs and woodlands. A savannah is a large, grassy area. These animals are herbivores. This means they eat only plants. They enjoy eating leaves, flowers, and fruit. They often eat woody plants like Acacia.

Southern giraffes have very special patterns on their bodies. Their spots can be rounded or blotched. Some spots even have star-like shapes on them. These patterns sit on a light tan or tawny background. The spots often run all the way down to their hooves.

In some groups, the spots get smaller as they go down the legs. This helps each animal look unique.

Scientists have changed how they name these animals over time. Carl Linnaeus first classified them in 1758. He called them Cervus camelopardalis. Later, Morten Thrane Brünnich named the genus Giraffa in 1772. For a long time, people thought all giraffes were one single species. Now, recent studies say the southern giraffe is its own separate species. This is called Giraffa giraffa.

There are two main groups of southern giraffes. The Angolan giraffe lives in places like Angola and Namibia. They have large brown blotches and white ear patches. About 13,000 of them live in the wild. The South African giraffe lives in South Africa and Botswana. They have dark, rounded patches. About 31,500 of them live in the wild.

Total numbers are between 44,500 and 50,000 animals.

Many people work to help these giraffes live in new places. These animals have been reintroduced to many areas. For example, they live in the Majete Game Reserve in Malawi. They also live in the Maputo and Zinave National Parks in Mozambique. In Angola, they live in the Cuatir Conservation Area. Some live in the Iona National Park too.

These efforts help the animals stay in the wild.
