Subspecies

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Living things belong to groups called species. Sometimes, a species has smaller groups called subspecies. These groups live in different areas. They might have different sizes or shapes. This is called morphology, which means their physical look.

Subspecies are very important for scientists to study. They show how life can change in different places. Not every species has subspecies. If they do, there must be at least two.

How does a scientist decide if a group is a subspecies? One main way is to see if they can interbreed. Interbreeding means they can mate and have babies. These babies must also be able to have their own babies. In the wild, these groups often stay apart. They might be kept apart by geographic isolation. This means they live in different places that are hard to cross.

They might also stay apart because of sexual selection. This is a way that certain traits are chosen by mates.

Scientists use special rules to give these groups names. In zoology, which is the study of animals, they use a trinomen. A trinomen is a name with three parts. The first two words are the species name. The third word is the subspecies name. For example, the leopard is Panthera pardus. The Indian leopard is called Panthera pardus fusca. All three words are written in italics.

Rules for naming can change depending on what is being studied. In botany, which is the study of plants, there are more ranks. Scientists might use words like variety or form. They use these to show very small differences. In bacteriology, the study of bacteria, there are also rules. For bacteria and viruses, there are recommendations for naming. In botany, the name must include the word "subspecies" or the short version "subsp."

This helps everyone know exactly which group is being discussed.

Some species are very different from others. A species with no subspecies is called a monotypic species. This means all the members look very similar. The Indian rhinoceros, or Rhinoceros unicornis, is a monotypic species.

On the other hand, a polytypic species has two or more different subspecies. These groups might look different because of their genes. Even if they look different, they are still part of the same big family. Understanding these groups helps us see how the natural world works.
