Purebred

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Purebred animals are special types of animals created through selective breeding. This is a way of choosing parents to make sure babies look and act a certain way. When two animals of the same breed mate, they often breed true-to-type. This means their babies will have the same observable characteristics, or phenotype, as their parents.

A group of these similar animals is called a pure-breeding line or a strain. This helps people know exactly what to expect from an animal's appearance or movement.

To keep track of these animals, people use a written record called a pedigree. A pedigreed animal has its family history recorded by a registry. The word pedigree comes from a word used in 1410. It was a visual way to show a family tree.

Some animals have very old histories that were not always written down. For example, the Bedouin people of the Arabian Peninsula used oral traditions. They used religious oaths to prove their Arabian horses were pure. This shows that knowing an animal's history is very important to people.

Selective breeding can sometimes cause hard jobs for the animals. Because purebreds come from a limited gene pool, they can have health problems. This often happens when breeders use inbreeding, which is mating very close relatives. Inbreeding can lead to undesirable traits or even a collapse in the population.

Some people argue that breeders should use "outside" animals to help. This can lead to hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor usually results in much healthier animals.

Many different animals can be purebred, including cats, dogs, and horses. In the United States, fewer than 2% of cats are purebred. In France, about 4% of cats are pedigreed.

Most cats in the world are actually mixed or unknown. For cats, registries recognize between 30 and 75 breeds. Some modern registries now recognize over 100 different cat varieties. This helps breeders keep the animals healthy and strong.

We can see these ideas in many animals we know. Some horse breeds, like the Frisian, have records going back a long time.

Even farm animals like cattle and sheep use these methods. Farmers use purebred stock to make sure their animals stay consistent. They might even use artificial insemination to help herds grow. This is a way to use the best animals to improve the whole group. It is a way to use science to help animals thrive.
