Romney sheep are a special kind of long-wool breed. They first came from England.

These sheep are very important for the world's wool and meat trades. Many people know them from New Zealand, where they are a huge part of the sheep flock. In fact, by 1965, three-quarters of the sheep in New Zealand were Romneys. They are useful because they grow a lot of wool. They also provide meat for people to eat.

These sheep have a very specific way they grow. They produce a heavy fleece with long fibers. This means the wool grows out quite far.

Because the fibers are long, the sheep can yield a lot of weight when they are shorn. A healthy male ram can yield over 15 pounds of wool every year. The wool is also very clean. This means that after you wash it, most of the weight stays. This is called a high clean yield.

History shows how these sheep traveled the world. The breed evolved from medieval longwool types in England. People improved them by crossing them with English Leicester sheep. The first big move happened in 1853. A shipment of 20 Romneys went from Stone, Kent, to New Zealand on a ship called the Cornwall. Later, Alfred Ludlum started a famous stud in New Zealand in 1860. Between 1900 and 1955, many sheep went from England to 43 different countries.

Scientists and farmers look at many details to describe a Romney. They look at the size of the sheep. In the U.S., a female should weigh 140 pounds or more. A male ram should weigh 200 pounds or more. They also measure the thickness of the wool. This is called the average fiber diameter, or AFD. A high AFD means the wool is thick and strong. This makes it perfect for making rugged things like carpets.

You can think of Romney wool like a sturdy rope. While some wool is soft for fancy suits, Romney wool is built to be tough. This makes it great for rugs used in homes. Some Romneys even have natural colors. They can be black, gray, or silver instead of white.

Hand-spinners love these colors for their crafts. These sheep are also very hardy. They can live well in damp pastures. They are often resistant to foot rot, which is a sickness that affects sheep feet.
