Some people call them stock dogs or simply working dogs. A dog that moves sheep is a sheep dog. A dog that moves cows is a cattle dog. These dogs are very important to farmers today. They help move large groups of animals to new places.

This work helps farms run smoothly and saves a lot of money.

Herding behavior is actually a type of modified predatory behavior. Humans used selective breeding to change how these dogs act. They kept the dog's natural hunting skills but stopped them from hurting the animals.

Different dogs use different ways to work. Some are called "headers" because they stay in front to turn the herd. Others are "heelers" that stay behind to push animals forward. The Australian Kelpie is very clever and can do both. It can even run along the backs of sheep to manage them.

These dogs have a long history with humans. People began raising sheep and goats in Western Asia a long time ago.

Early herders did not have horses to help them move animals. They used dogs that once helped with hunting to protect the herds. At first, the dogs had to be brave and strong to fight wild predators. Archaeological finds show sheep and dogs lived together as far back as 3685 BC. These early dogs lived in places like modern Turkey, Iraq, and Syria.

Many different breeds have developed for specific jobs and places. The Finnish Lapphund lives in Lapland and herds reindeer in the snow.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a small dog from Wales. Because they are short, they can avoid being kicked by cattle. In the mountains of Italy, the Bergamasco Sheepdog has a special "flock" coat. This thick hair protects them from the cold and from predators. In Australia, famous breeds like the Kelpie and Koolie work on huge stations.

Herding dogs have bodies that are perfect for outdoor work. They are usually muscular, lean, and very agile.

Their paws are built to handle thorns and sharp stones. They have thick pads and strong claws to stay safe. Their coats are often very dense to keep them dry and warm. Most herding dogs also have excellent hearing and eyesight. This helps them watch the animals and listen to the farmer's commands.
