A herd is a social group made of animals from the same species.

These animals are called gregarious, which means they like to live in groups. Most people use the word herd for mammals, especially those that graze on grass. You might hear different names for other groups of animals. For example, a group of birds is often called a flock.

Large groups of hunters, like wolves, are usually called packs. Even the word herd can describe a person. A shepherd or a cowherd is someone who cares for these animals.

Groups in a herd do not work like a sports team. In a sports team, every person has a specific job to do. A herd is more unstructured and does not use a plan. Instead, animals move together by following what others are doing. They might imitate their neighbors or respond to the same things around them. Sometimes, one or two animals act as a control animal.

The rest of the group copies this animal to decide where to go. This animal is not always the boss or the strongest member. It simply helps predict how the whole group will move.

Living in a group offers many helpful benefits to animals. One major benefit is called the dilution effect. This happens because a predator has to choose just one target to attack. In a very large group, the chance of any single animal being picked is much smaller.

Another benefit is collective vigilance, which means many eyes are watching for danger. While some animals eat or rest, others can keep a lookout. Some animals, like meerkats, even take turns being guards.

This allows the rest of the group to spend more time finding food.

Groups can also make finding and eating food much easier. Some predators, like wild dogs, hunt together to catch large prey. Spinner dolphins work as a team to trap fish in small areas.

Large groups of lions can even protect their food from hyenas. Some animals use special sounds or dances to tell others where food is. For instance, bees use a waggle dance to share information. However, living in a group has some hard jobs too. Animals must compete with each other for the same food. They also have to deal with diseases that spread easily in large groups.

Even the way animals move can save them energy. Birds flying in a V-shape use the air to help them fly more easily. This is a way to reduce the energy they spend while traveling. Some fish also swim in fixed formations to get a similar benefit. Living in a group can also help during very cold weather. Staying close together helps animals keep their warmth. Whether they are protecting themselves or finding food, these animals find ways to thrive together. It is amazing how much a group can change an animal's life.
