The Romney is a significant breed of long-wool sheep that originated in England.

These sheep are economically vital to the global sheep-meat and wool export industries. They are particularly important to the economy of New Zealand. While they are not the ideal breed for every single situation, they possess unique strengths. For example, they can thrive at very high population densities. They are also known for their hardiness in specific environments. Many breeders value them for their ability to resist common health issues.

One of the most notable physical traits of the Romney is its fleece. The breed produces a heavy fleece characterized by long fiber length. This length allows the sheep to yield a high amount of wool during shearing. A healthy, mature ram can yield over 15 pounds of wool per year. In New Zealand, breeding ewes often average more than 10 pounds. The Romney also has a high "clean yield." This means that after the wool is thoroughly washed, about 75% to 80% of the weight remains. This is a higher percentage than many fine-wooled sheep provide.

Scientists and farmers classify the quality of this wool using average fiber diameter, or AFD. AFD is a measurement of how thick the individual wool fibers are. Romney wool has a high AFD, which makes it very strong. This strength makes it ideal for rugged products like carpeting and rugs. This is different from fine-wooled breeds like the Merino. Merinos have much higher numbers of wool follicles, but their fibers grow much slower and are shorter. While Merino wool is used for luxury suit fabrics, Romney wool is built for durability.

The history of the Romney is a story of global movement. The breed evolved from medieval longwool types in England. Over time, breeders improved the body type and fleece quality. They did this by crossing the sheep with the English Leicester breed. The first confirmed export of Romneys from England occurred in 1853. A shipment of 20 sheep traveled from Stone, Kent, to New Zealand on the ship *Cornwall*. By 1860, Alfred Ludlum had established the first Romney Marsh stud in New Zealand. Between 1900 and 1955, England exported 18,000 rams and 9,000 ewes to 43 different countries.

In New Zealand, the Romney became a dominant force in the livestock industry. In 1855, there were 60,000 Merinos in the country. However, the Romney Marsh sheep thrived more quickly and eventually replaced the Merino across most of the nation. By 1965, Romneys made up three-quarters of the New Zealand national flock. In the mid-1990s, they still comprised 58% of the flock, which was estimated at 45 million sheep in 2000. The New Zealand export lamb trade began in 1882 with a massive shipment of 4,900 frozen carcasses to London.

There are also variations in color and size within the breed. Most Romneys have a white fleece, but some have natural colors like black, gray, or silver.

In North America, these natural-colored Romneys are highly valued by hand-spinners and weavers. Traditionally, black fibers were seen as a problem in white wool production, but breeders now have special standards for them. Regarding size, the breed sits in the larger half of the spectrum when compared to smaller sheep like the Cheviot. In the United States, breed standards suggest ewes should weigh 140 pounds or more, while rams should weigh 200 pounds or more.

The Romney's impact reaches far into global trade systems. New Zealand is the world's largest producer and exporter of "strong crossbred" wool. This term refers to wool with an AFD greater than 35.4 microns. In the 2002–2003 period, New Zealand exported about 138,000 tonnes of wool on a clean basis. This wool goes to rug and carpet factories in the European Union, Asia, the United States, and Australia. The breed's success is also tied to meat production. New Zealand is the world's largest exporter of frozen and chilled lamb, and Romneys are a major part of this trade.
