Angora rabbits are a special group of domestic rabbits. They are famous for their long, soft coats. People call this hair Angora wool. The wool is very silky and soft. It is only 14 to 16 micrometres wide. This is very fine, just like cashmere.

Because the wool is so nice, people use it for many things. They use it to make sweaters, mittens, and baby clothes. It is also used to make hats, which is called millinery.

There are a few ways to gather the wool. People can pluck the hair by hand. They can also shear the coat using clippers or small scissors. This is often done while the rabbit sits on a turntable.

Most people harvest the wool every three to four months. This must be done regularly to keep the rabbit healthy. If the hair is not brushed, it can mat or felt. This can cause the rabbit pain or even an infection.

These rabbits have a long history. They likely came from Ankara in Turkey. People brought them to France in 1723. In the mid-18th century, they were pets for French royalty. By the end of that century, they spread across Europe. In the United States, people loved making clothes from the wool. This became very popular in the early 20th century. Production in the U.S. even grew during World War II.

All Angora rabbits have a special gene. This gene is called the lowercase L. It is what makes their hair so long and thick. This gene is even used to help make other rabbit breeds. Some rabbits also have a hard job staying healthy. They can get a problem called wool block. This happens if they swallow too much of their own hair. To prevent this, owners must clip or pluck the wool every 90 to 120 days.
