The Birman is a special breed of domestic cat. People often call them the "Sacred Cat of Burma."

They are known for their silky, long hair and deep blue eyes. One of their most famous features is the white fur on their paws. This fur looks like tiny white gloves.

These gloves must cover all the toes on each paw. The white fur can even travel up the back of the leg in a shape called laces. This unique look makes them easy to recognize.

Many people wonder how these cats first appeared. No one has a clear record of where they started. Some stories say they were companions to temple priests in northern Burma. Other stories say they were given as rewards for helping defend a temple. Some say a person named a Vanderbilt smuggled them out of Burma. Another story says a man named Thaddeus Haddisch brought a pair to France. These stories show how much people have wondered about them for a long time.

History shows that Birmans almost disappeared during World War II. By the end of the war, only two cats remained in Europe. These two cats were named Orloff and Xenia de Kaabaa. They belonged to a person named Baudoin-Crevoisier. To save the breed, people bred them with Persian and Siamese cats. This helped rebuild the Birman group. By the early 1950s, breeders were making pure Birman kittens again. The breed was recognized in Britain in 1965 and in the United States in 1966.

There are many different colors for Birman cats. The very first ones were seal point. In 1959, breeders added the blue point color. Later, they added chocolate, red, and tabby colors too.

Birmans also helped create new breeds like the Ragdoll. Some breeders use a fun way to name their kittens. They pick one letter of the alphabet for every kitten born in a single year. For example, all kittens born in 2016 would have names starting with 'N'.

Birmans are quite healthy and can live a long time. A study of 38 cats found they live about 14.39 years. This is higher than the average cat, which lives about 11.74 years.

Doctors do check them for certain health issues. They look at things like creatinine and SDMA in the blood. These are markers used to check for kidney disease. Some Birmans may also have a type of epilepsy called FARS. Even with these risks, they remain beloved pets around the world.
