Ragdoll

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Ragdoll is a very large breed of domestic cat.

These cats are famous for their calm and gentle nature. Many people call them "dog-like" or "puppy cats." This is because they often follow people from room to room. They can even be trained to fetch toys. Their name comes from a special way they act. When you pick them up, they often go limp and relaxed.

Ragdolls have a very specific way they look.

They have large, round, deep-blue eyes. The genes that give them their color also create these blue eyes. Most Ragdolls have a coat called colorpoint. This means their face, ears, legs, and tail are darker than their bodies. They can also have a mitted pattern with white paws. Some even have a bicolor pattern with a white V on their face. Their fur is silky, dense, and medium to long in length.

A breeder named Ann Baker started this breed in Riverside, California.

In 1963, a white cat named Josephine had several litters of kittens. These kittens had a very calm and placid temperament. Baker used these cats to build the breed. Two important cats from these litters were Blackie and Daddy Warbucks. All Ragdolls today come from the cats Baker bred. She even started her own group called the International Ragdoll Cat Association in 1971. This group helped set strict rules for the breed.

In 1975, a new group began working to help Ragdolls become more popular.

Denny and Laura Dayton led this group. They wanted the breed to be recognized by major cat registries. They used Ragdolls to create the standards used today. The breed also moved to other parts of the world. A pair of Ragdolls was sent to the United Kingdom early on. Eight more cats followed them to help the breed grow there. Now, Ragdolls are very popular in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Ragdolls are much bigger than many other household cats.

It can take up to four years for them to reach their full size. Females are large, but males are even bigger and heavier. They have sturdy bodies and thick limbs. They also have bushy tails and large, round paws. Unlike some cats that like to climb high, Ragdolls often prefer staying low to the ground. They are wonderful companions for people who want a relaxed and playful pet.
