People often call them "gentle giants" because they are social and kind. This breed is the official state cat of Maine in the United States.

They are known for having huge bodies and long, thick fur. This fur helps them survive in the cold, harsh weather of Maine. Many people notice they have dog-like traits. They are also one of the biggest non-hybrid cat breeds in the world.

These cats have many special tools to help them live in the snow.

Their thick, water-resistant fur is longer on their belly and rear. This protects them when they sit on wet ice or snow. They have bushy tails that look like raccoon tails. A cat can curl this tail around its face to stay warm. Their large paws act like snowshoes to help them walk.

Long tufts of hair also grow between their toes to keep them warm.

There are many old stories about where these cats came from.

One myth says they are part raccoon or part bobcat. Another story says they came from Viking ships. A third tale involves Queen Marie Antoinette of France. People say her Turkish Angora cats arrived in Wiscasset, Maine, after she tried to escape.

Science shows they are actually related to cats brought by settlers from the UK. They look like other cold-weather cats because of convergent evolution. This means different animals develop similar traits to survive the same hard jobs.

Maine Coons have a long history in cat shows.

In 1895, a female cat named Cosey won "Best in Show" at a big event in New York City.

However, their popularity dropped in the early 1900s when other breeds arrived. The breed almost disappeared and was called extinct in the 1950s. Luckily, people worked hard to bring them back. The Central Maine Cat Club was started in the 1950s to help. By 1976, they were fully recognized for championship competitions. In 1985, Maine named them their official state cat.

Today, these cats are incredibly popular all over the world.

In 2024, the Maine Coon was the number one most popular breed in some registries. They can grow very slowly, reaching full size at three to five years old.

Some Maine Coons even have a trait called polydactylism, which means they have extra toes.

This trait does not cause health problems for the cat. You might see them in your own home or in books. They remain a favorite for people who love big, friendly pets.
