The Maine Coon is a large breed of domesticated cat.

It is one of the oldest landraces in North America. This means it developed naturally in a specific region. Many people call them "gentle giants" because they are social and kind. The breed is the official state cat of Maine.

They are famous for their massive size and long, dense coats. These physical traits help them survive in very cold climates. Today, they are among the most popular cats in global registries.

Many myths surround the origin of the Maine Coon. One legend claims they are hybrids of raccoons or bobcats. Another story suggests they descended from Viking ship cats. A third tale involves Queen Marie Antoinette of France. It is said her Turkish Angora cats arrived in Wiscasset, Maine, after she tried to escape in 1793. However, science offers a different explanation. Phylogenetic studies show they belong to the Western European monophyletic cat branch. They are genetically closest to cats from the United Kingdom.

Their similarity to Siberian or Norwegian Forest cats is due to convergent evolution. This happens when different species develop similar traits to survive similar environments.

Their bodies are built for harsh, snowy winters. The Maine Coon has a dense, water-resistant double coat. This fur is shorter on the head and shoulders. It grows longer on the stomach and flanks for extra protection.

Their long, bushy tails resemble raccoon tails. A cat can curl its tail around its face to block the wind. They can also use it as an insulated cushion when sitting on ice. Their large paws act like snowshoes to help them walk on snow.

Long tufts of fur grow between their toes for warmth and structure. Even their ears have extra long tufts of fur inside to stay warm.

Maine Coons are remarkably large animals. They are the largest non-hybrid breed of domestic cat. Males typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. Females usually weigh between 8 and 12 pounds.

They can reach a length of up to 40 inches, including the tail. Their bodies are solid and muscular to support this weight. These cats mature slowly compared to other breeds. They often do not reach their full size until they are three to five years old. In 2010, a male named Stewie was recognized as the "Longest Cat" by Guinness World Records.

History shows the breed has faced many ups and downs. They were popular in late 19th-century cat shows. In 1895, a female named Cosey won "Best in Show" in New York City.

However, popularity declined in the early 20th century. Long-haired breeds from overseas, like the Persian, became more common. The breed almost disappeared and was declared extinct in the 1950s. This claim was likely exaggerated. To save the breed, the Central Maine Cat Club was formed in the 1950s. They created the first written breed standards. By 1976, the breed gained official championship status from the CFA.

Some Maine Coons possess a unique trait called polydactylism. This means they have one or more extra toes on a paw.

This is caused by a simple autosomal dominant gene. This mutation does not cause other health problems for the cat. In the past, extra toes could disqualify a cat from shows. Now, some organizations like TICA allow the trait. Many breeders offer polydactyl kittens as household pets. This trait is a notable part of the breed's physical diversity.

Health is an important part of caring for these large cats. Some Maine Coons may face a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is a type of heart disease. A mutation in the MYBPC3 gene is associated with this condition. Research at Washington State University shows about one-third of tested cats carry this mutation. However, not every cat with the mutation shows signs of the disease. Studies on lifespan show they generally live a long time. In Sweden, the median lifespan was over 12.5 years. They remain a beloved and successful breed worldwide.
