The Russian Blue is a distinct pedigreed cat breed.

It is defined by a solid blue coat that has remained its most famous feature for over a century. This breed is recognized and holds championship status with all major international cat registries. While they began as a natural landrace, they are now selectively bred to maintain specific physical and behavioral traits. This process ensures that all Russian Blues are purebred cats with formally registered ancestry.

A defining characteristic is the cat's dense, short double coat. This coat consists of two layers: a soft, downy undercoat and outer guard hairs. The undercoat is equal in length to the guard hairs. The guard hairs are an even blue color but feature distinct silver tips. These silver tips create a shimmering, silvery sheen and a lustrous appearance.

The fur is exceptionally thick and soft. While the body is a solid color, the tail may show faint, barely perceptible tabby striping.

Other physical traits include bright emerald green or yellow-green eyes and pinkish lavender to mauve paw pads.

History suggests the breed may have originated from a natural landrace in the port of Arkhangelsk, Russia. Because of this, they are sometimes called Archangel Blues. It is believed that sailors transported them from the Archangel Isles to Great Britain and Northern Europe during the 1860s. The first British print reference to an Archangel Cat appeared in 1862. In 1872, they made their first recorded appearance in a show at The Crystal Palace in England.

Initially, the breed was developed mainly in the UK and Scandinavia.

Following World War II, the breed faced a shortage in numbers. To preserve the population, breeders used crossbreeding with Siamese cats. While US breeders later combined Scandinavian and British bloodlines to create the modern American Russian Blue, they have since bred out most Siamese traits. However, these Siamese genes left behind color-point genes in some lines. If two carriers are bred together, they produce a mixed litter of solid blue or blue-point cats. These are known as Colour-Point-Russian Blues, or informally, Pika Blu cats.

Some breeders have used the breed to create other cats, like the Havana Brown or the Nebelung.

Russian Blues are known for their high intelligence and athleticism. They possess an excellent memory and can remember the hiding places of their favorite toys. They also remember familiar visitors, even after long periods of time.

These cats are highly athletic and can leap and climb as well as Abyssinians. Behaviorally, they are generally quiet and can be trained to perform tricks. They are often reserved around strangers but are loving in active households. They prefer predictable, routine schedules and do not like sudden changes.

There are several color variations that exist outside of the standard blue. Russian Whites and Russian Blacks were created by crossing the breed with domestic white cats. One line was developed by Frances McLeod in the UK during the 1960s. A second line was produced by Dick and Mavis Jones in Australia in the 1970s. While some organizations like the ACF and GCCF recognize these colors, others like the CFA and TICA only recognize the blue variety. It is also important not to confuse them with British Blues, Chartreux, or Korat cats.

The breed remains relatively rare in the global cat population. For example, in 2024, only 2,370 British Blue kittens were registered with the FIFe. This represented approximately 2.5% of their total registrations. Understanding the specific biology of the breed is also important for breeders. The blue coat is actually the dilute expression of the black gene. Because dilute genes are recessive, two non-carrier parents will always produce blue kittens. This genetic consistency is what allows the breed to maintain its iconic look through generations.
