life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ragdolls are a large breed of cat.

They are famous for their big, blue eyes. They also have soft, silky coats. A breeder named Ann Baker started this breed. She did this in California during the 1960s.

One cat named Josephine helped start the breed. Josephine had kittens that were very calm. These cats are often called "dog-like." This is because they follow people around. They can even learn to fetch toys. The name Ragdoll comes from how they act. They go limp and relaxed when you pick them up.

Ragdolls have a special look called colorpoint. This means their face, ears, legs, and tail are darker. Their bodies stay a lighter color. They come in colors like seal, chocolate, and red. Some have white paws or bellies. It can take four years for a Ragdoll to grow to its full size. They are much larger than many other cats.
