Devon Rex

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Devon Rex is a unique breed of cat. It first appeared in England in the late 1950s.

This cat has a very special look. Many people say it looks like a pixie. It has a short head with a wide shape. Its eyes are large and oval. The ears are also very big. They sit wide apart on the head.

The fur on this cat is very short. It is also soft and dense. The hair curls inward to make waves. This gives the coat a rippled look. Even the whiskers can be curly or twisted. These cats can be any color. Their eyes can be any color, too.

A woman named Beryl Cox found a special kitten. She found the kitten in 1960. She named the kitten Kirlee. Kirlee had a curly coat. Beryl thought the coat came from a Cornish Rex. She bred Kirlee with those cats. But the new kittens had straight hair. This showed Kirlee had a different mutation. A mutation is a change in genes. Beryl then started a program to save this trait.
