They come from the Isle of Man. Most Manx cats are known for having no tail. This happens because of a mutation. A mutation is a change in how traits are passed down. This change is caused by a dominant gene. This means the trait shows up easily in kittens.

Manx cats can have different tail lengths. Some are called "rumpy" if they have no tail. Others are "stumpy" if they have a small part of a tail.

Some may even have a long tail. These cats have long back legs and round heads. They are often very active and good at hunting. Farmers like them because they can catch rodents.

Manx cats come in many colors and patterns. White cats are quite rare. Some Manx cats have long hair. These are sometimes called Cymric cats. Even without a tail, these cats stay balanced. This is because balance comes from the inner ear.
