These cats have silky coats and sapphire-blue eyes. They are very smart and love to play. Many people say they act like dogs because they are so social. They like to be close to their owners. They are also very vocal and like to talk.

Even though they have these names, they are not from the islands of Bali or Java. They are actually closely related to the Siamese cat.

These cats have a special look called point coloration.

This means they have dark colors on their face, ears, paws, and tail. This happens because of a tiny change in how their bodies make color. The part of the body that makes color is heat-sensitive. It does not work well when the skin is warm. It only works in the cooler parts of the cat. The face stays cool because air moves through the sinuses. This is why the dark color shows up on the extremities.

History shows us how these cats became a special breed.

Long ago, Siamese cats were moved from Thailand to the U.S. and U.K. Some of these cats had a natural gene for long hair. At first, people thought these long-haired kittens were a mistake. They were only sold as pets. By 1928, they were registered as show cats. In the 1950s, breeders began to make them a separate breed. A breeder named Helen Smith gave them the name Balinese. She chose this name because it sounded as graceful as Balinese dancers.

There are two main ways these cats look today.

The traditional type is sturdier with a broader head. This type was popular when the breed first started. The modern type is much more slender and thin. These modern cats have a head shaped like a wedge.

A famous breeder named Sylvia Holland helped set the rules for the breed. She worked hard during the 1960s and 1970s. She only accepted cats with classic colors like seal, chocolate, blue, or lilac. Other colors like red or cream are called Javanese.

Learning about Balinese cats helps us understand how breeds change.

They are part of a small group of cats with the same history. This small group is called a pedigree. Because they come from a small group, they must be watched for health issues. One possible problem is a change in the eye called Progressive Retinal Atrophy. This can make their vision weak. Even with these things, they remain very popular. They are famous for being acrobatic and very intelligent living things.
