Tonkinese cat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Tonkinese is a special breed of domestic cat.

It is a mix of the Siamese and Burmese breeds. These cats are known for being very active and social. They love to be around people and stay busy. Because they are so lively, they can get bored easily. Some even act like dogs by playing fetch.

This breed is a unique blend of two famous cats.

These cats have very interesting coat patterns. There are three main ways their color looks. The first is the pointed pattern from Siamese cats. This means they have dark ears, legs, and tails. The second is the solid pattern from Burmese cats. This color stays mostly the same over the whole body. The third is the mink pattern, which is a mix.

Mink cats have a lighter base color. They also have beautiful aquamarine eyes. These eyes are a light blue-green color.

History shows how these cats came to be. In the 1800s, people brought cats from Malaysia to the West. These cats were called chocolate Siamese. People noticed they had darker coats and aquamarine eyes. In 1901, the Siamese Cat Club recognized them. Many cats used to start the Siamese and Burmese breeds were likely Tonkinese. It was not until the 1950s that breeders focused on them. By 1965, Canada recognized them as their own breed.

Modern Tonkinese cats came from two different breeders. Margaret Conroy worked in Canada to develop them. Jane Barletta worked in the United States. They wanted to combine the looks and personalities of both parents. The breed received championship status in 1984. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy recognized them in 1991. Today, they are found in many places like Europe and Japan. You can even find them on postage stamps in 30 countries.

You might notice how these cats feel when you hold them. They are medium-sized but very muscular. They often feel much heavier than they look. Their bodies are a middle ground between two other breeds. They are not as thin as a Siamese cat. They are also not as thick as an American Burmese. This makes them a sturdy and strong type of pet. They are a wonderful example of how different traits can mix together.
