It is often seen as a pale sandy fawn or a grayish tan. Some people describe it as a light yellowish brown. This color is very popular in many parts of our lives. Designers use it to make rooms feel calm. People also choose it for clothing, like men's trousers. Because it is so neutral, it fits in almost anywhere.

There are many ways to describe shades that look like beige.

The color buff comes from the look of fine, undyed leather. Another shade is called desert sand, which is a deep version of beige. In Japan, unbleached silk is a traditional color used for kimonos. You might also hear the word ecru. This word comes from French and means "raw" or "unbleached." For a long time, beige and ecru were the exact same thing.

The history of the word beige begins in France. It was used to describe natural wool that had no dyes. It also had no bleach added to it.

In France, the word became common around the years 1855 to 1860. A writer named Edmond de Goncourt used the word in 1877. The word did not enter the English language until 1887. Many other color names like Tuscan appeared in English around that same time.

Beige shows up in many interesting places in our world.

In the 1960s, the AT&T company sold telephones in a color called desert sand. They called this color beige, so many people use that name now. During the 1970s and 1980s, many office tools were beige too. This trend started in Germany and spread across the globe. Eventually, black computers like the IBM ThinkPad became more popular in the 1990s.

We can find this color in nature and even in space.

Some animals, like the beige rabbit or the catshark, use this color. Even the universe has a color! In 2002, astronomers from Johns Hopkins University named the average color of the universe "Cosmic Latte." They found this by looking at 200,000 different galaxies. While some people use "beige" to mean something is boring, it is actually a very busy color in science and nature.
