They are most famous for their very long horns. These horns can stretch out a great distance from tip to tip. These cattle are very hardy animals. This means they can live well in heat and dry weather. They can also thrive on pastures that are not very good for other animals. Because they are so tough, they are a big part of Texas history.

These cattle have a very interesting way of living. Long ago, they lived a semi-feral life on open rangelands. This means they lived mostly in the wild. Over many generations, they changed to fit their environment. They developed a high tolerance for drought and heat. This happened because only the toughest animals survived in the wild. Their coats also come in many different looks. About 40% of them have some shade of red. Other cattle can be black, brown, cream, or even spotted.

The story of the Longhorn began with Spanish explorers. They brought cattle from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. This happened during the time of Christopher Columbus. The first cattle landed in 1493 on an island called Hispaniola. Later, the Spaniards moved the cattle into Mexico. Eventually, they moved them north into the area we call Texas. By the end of the 17th century, they were in the Texas area. Some of these cattle escaped or were left loose on the open range.

In the 1900s, people worked hard to save the breed. The Longhorn stock was very small and almost disappeared. In 1927, the United States Forest Service helped save them. They started a small herd in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. A Longhorn named Bevo even became the mascot for the University of Texas at Austin in 1917. Later, Charles Schreiner III started a new herd in 1957. He bought six young cattle for $75 each. In 1964, he started the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America.

Today, these animals are very important to Texas culture. The state named the Longhorn its official large mammal in 1995. Some Longhorns are even world record holders for their horn size. In 2022, the Guinness Book of Records named three Longhorns with the longest horn spreads. One was a steer named Poncho Via. Another was a cow named 3S Danica. A bull named Cowboy Tuff Chex also held a record. Some very special Longhorns can sell for huge amounts of money at auctions. One cow sold for $380,000 in Fort Worth in 2017.
