Neanderthals were a group of ancient humans who lived a long time ago. They lived in Europe and parts of Western and Central Asia.

These people are very important to our history. They lived during the Middle to Late Pleistocene time. Scientists believe they went extinct about 40,000 years ago. This happened as modern humans, called Cro-Magnons, moved into their lands.

Some Neanderthals in Gibraltar might have lived much longer than that.

Their bodies were built in a special way to survive. They had long and low skulls with a heavy brow ridge. This ridge is a thick bone above the eyes. They also had a bony bump on the back of the head.

Their chests were wide and their limbs were short. These traits likely helped them stay warm in cold climates. This change happened through natural selection over a long time. They were also very good at sprinting.

Finding out about them took many years of hard work. The first famous fossil was found in 1856. It was found in the Neander Valley in Germany.

A teacher named Johann Carl Fuhlrott recognized these bones. He gave them to a scientist named Hermann Schaaffhausen to study. In 1863, an Irish geologist named William King gave them a scientific name. He called them Homo neanderthalensis to show they were a unique species.

Neanderthals were quite skilled at living in the wild. They made stone tools known as Mousterian tools.

They knew how to use fire and might have worn blankets. They ate many things like plants, mushrooms, and big animals. They even buried their dead, though we do not know if they believed in life after death. They may have even made art with bird claws and feathers.

Some Neanderthals even made engravings or collected crystals.

Today, we know they were more like us than we once thought. In 2010, scientists studied the Neanderthal genome. This is the complete set of genetic instructions for a living thing.

They discovered that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred. This means the two groups had families together. This discovery changed how we think about the human family tree. We now know our histories are closely linked together.
