It sits on the island of Saint Vincent. The city is in the south-west corner of the island. Steep hills rise up all around the town. Kingstown has a large port for ships. It is also a center for farming and trade. Many tourists arrive through this city.

French settlers founded the city shortly after 1722. The city has a botanical garden. This garden was started in 1765. It is one of the oldest in its part of the world. A man named William Bligh brought breadfruit seeds here to plant.

In 1866, a large fire hit much of the town. This led to new plans for a water supply. The work was finished in 1871. The population has changed over time. In 1825, about 3,000 people lived there. By 2012, the population was 12,909. In 1991, the city was smaller but its suburbs grew. The government may rename parts of the country soon. Kingstown is one of the areas on that list.
