This water acts like a marina for many different kinds of boats. It allows medium yachts and small craft to enter the inner basin. This basin is located directly in front of the Parliament buildings. The Careenage actually splits the city into two separate parts. During the rainy season, the Constitution River flows into this area too. This river helps carry water away from the storm drains in the country.

Before they arrived, the island was mostly uninhabited by people. There was a primitive bridge over the Careenage swamp made by the Tainos. This group was an indigenous people of the Caribbean region. Scholars believe the Tainos were moved to Saint Lucia by the Kalinagos. Later, the British built a new bridge over the Careenage in 1654. This led to the area being called the Town of Saint Michael. Eventually, it became known as Bridgetown after Sir Tobias Bridge.
