The city sits on the north side of Hamilton Harbour. It is located within a place called Pembroke Parish. Because it has a small land area, it is one of the smallest capital cities on Earth. In 2016, the permanent population was only 854 people. However, about 13,340 people traveled there to work every day in 2010.

The city works as a busy hub for international companies. Many large insurance and investment businesses are based right here. It is known globally as a center for reinsurance. You can find headquarters for famous names like Bacardi and Frontline Ltd. in the city. Some buildings are as high as ten storeys. There is a special rule to protect the view of the cathedral. This means no building can grow tall enough to hide it from sight.

History began for Hamilton in 1790 when the government set it aside. It was officially named for Governor Henry Hamilton. The city was incorporated in 1793 by an Act of Parliament. Later, the capital moved here from St. George's in 1815. In 1897, the town officially became a city. A famous cathedral, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, was finished in 1911. Queen Elizabeth II even visited the city hall in 1975.

The city has a very specific look and feel. The weather is warm and humid all year long. It is a tropical rainforest climate. Even though it is far from the equator, the ocean keeps it steady. It rarely gets too hot or too cold. Coconut palms grow well here because of the warmth. Rainfall is plentiful and there is no dry season. You might see thunderstorms or tropical disturbances in the summer.

A very famous event is the Bermuda Gold Cup. This is a major match-racing sailing competition. The races happen only 15 meters from the shore. This makes it a great sport for people to watch from the land. The city's flag features white flowers on a blue background.
