France has many lands far away from Europe.

These lands are called Overseas France. There are 13 territories in total. They are spread across the whole world. Some are islands in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. One part, French Guiana, is in South America. There are also lands near the cold ice of Antarctica.

Different places have different rules. Five areas are called overseas regions. They work just like the parts of France in Europe. Other places are called overseas collectivities. These places can make some of their own laws. New Caledonia has a special status too.

Many people live in these lands. About 2,891,000 people lived there in early 2026. Most people are citizens of France. This means they can vote in French elections. They also have leaders in the French Parliament.

Some places have no people living there. These are called uninhabited territories. Scientists sometimes visit these spots to do work. Even though they are far away, they are all part of France.
