It sits in the Eastern Anatolia region. It is part of the Armenian highlands. Many small streams flow into the lake from nearby mountains.

The water is very salty and alkaline. This means the water has a high pH level. This salt helps keep the lake from freezing. Even in the cold winter, the water stays liquid.

A long time ago, a volcano changed the lake. Lava from Mount Nemrut blocked the old way out. Now, the lake has no outlet. This makes it an endorheic lake. It holds 38% of all surface water in Turkey.

Special fish live in these waters. The Pearl Mullet is a fish that lives here. In the spring, these fish swim to rivers to lay eggs. Then, they return to the lake.

People can find old ruins under the water. Divers found a large fortress deep below the surface. They think it was built during the Urartian period. The rising lake may have covered the city long ago.
