Mount Ararat is one of the famous mountains there. The region is very big. It makes up about 21% of Turkey. It also has the lowest population density. This means there are fewer people living there compared to other areas.

The weather is often harsh. Winters are long, cold, and snowy. Summers are short. In the summer, the low lands are warm. The high lands stay cool. Many rivers flow through this land. These rivers get power from the high slopes. They can make hydroelectric power.

In the past, this area was known as the Armenian highlands. It had many Armenian people living there. After the Armenian genocide, the name of the region changed. The Turkish government renamed it Eastern Anatolia.
