The Malays are an Austronesian ethnoreligious group with deep roots in Maritime Southeast Asia.

They are native to the Malay Peninsula, eastern Sumatra, and coastal Borneo. This region also includes the Riau Archipelago. Today, Malay populations live across several modern nations. These include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. They also reside in southern Thailand and the southern tip of Myanmar. Because of centuries of migration and assimilation, the group shows great cultural and linguistic diversity. This diversity comes from many different regional ethnicities and tribes living together over time.

Historians trace the origins of the Malays through different migration theories.

One theory, the Taiwan theory, suggests people moved from Southern China 6,000 years ago. These people moved to Taiwan, then the Philippines, and eventually to Borneo about 4,500 years ago. Another theory, the Yunnan theory, proposes a migration from Yunnan 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. A third idea, the New Guinea theory, involves skilled seafarers traveling between New Zealand and Madagascar. These early migrants are often called Proto-Malays. They are the ancestors of groups like the Moken, Jakun, and Orang Asli.

Following the Proto-Malays, the Deutero-Malays arrived with more advanced technology. These people were part of the Iron Age. They possessed better farming techniques and knowledge of metals. Unlike the nomadic Proto-Malays, the Deutero-Malays established settled communities. They built villages known as kampungs.

These kampungs were usually located near riverbanks or coastal areas. This allowed the communities to be self-sufficient in food and other necessities. By the end of the 1st century BCE, these settled groups began engaging in more complex social structures.

The 15th century marked a major turning point with the rise of the Malacca Sultanate.

This era triggered a revolution in Malay history and shaped a lasting political and cultural legacy. During this period, the core markers of Malay identity were established. These include the religion of Islam, the Malay language, and specific traditions. This process is often called ethnogenesis, where a distinct group identity forms. The Malacca Sultanate set a high standard for later sultanates to follow. This included excellence in architecture, literature, and royal court traditions.

Ancient history also features many powerful maritime trading states and kingdoms.

Notable examples include Srivijaya, Brunei, Kedah, and Langkasuka. These kingdoms were founded by Malayic-speaking Austronesians and Austroasiatic tribes. The Chinese Buddhist monk Yijing visited the region between 688 and 695 CE. He recorded a kingdom called Mo-lo-yu. He noted that it was a 15-day sail from both Palembang and Kedah. Some scholars believe the name "Melayu" comes from the word *melaju*, meaning "to accelerate." This likely refers to the strong current of a river.

Malay culture is expressed through many distinct and beautiful traditions.

Traditional dress is a major part of this identity. For example, women in Palembang often wear intricate ikat weaves.

Culinary traditions, such as spicy dishes like asam pedas, are also central. The performing arts include shadow puppetry, known as Wayang Kulit.

Martial arts and royal court traditions also remain important. These cultural elements were spread during the golden age of the Malay sultanates across Sumatra and Borneo.

The term "Malay" has also evolved to include other ethnic groups. In Malaysia and Singapore, the term can extend to descendants of immigrants. These groups, such as the Acehnese, Bugis, and Javanese, are sometimes called *anak dagang*, or "traders." Historically, the Malays were a coastal-trading community with fluid characteristics. They were known to absorb and share cultural features with groups like the Minangkabau. This ability to integrate different cultures has helped shape the complex social landscape of Southeast Asia today.
