These islands are the center of a big disagreement. This is called a territorial dispute. Japan, China, and Taiwan all claim the islands.

In 1969, experts found something exciting under the sea. They found potential oil and natural gas reserves nearby. This discovery made the area even more important to everyone. Because of this, the islands are hard to visit. The Japanese government restricts public access to them. This means people cannot easily land on the islands to explore.

History shows that many people have used these islands. Long ago, Chinese sailors used them as markers. They used the islands to help guide their ships.

Around 1900, a business was built on the islands. Workers lived there to process bonito fish.

This business used over 200 workers. However, the business failed around 1940. The islands have stayed empty since that time. They are now mostly used by nature.

Ownership of the islands has changed many times. Japan has administered them since 1895. This was interrupted by World War II. From 1945 to 1972, the United States controlled the islands. The US managed them as part of the Ryukyu Islands. In 1971, a treaty was passed to return them. Japan took control again in 1972.

Since the early 2010s, things have become more tense. The China Coast Guard often enters the waters nearby. This leads to warnings between different coast guards.

Even without people, the islands are full of life. They are very important nesting sites for seabirds.

One very special bird lives there. It is called the short-tailed albatross. These birds are quite rare. The islands are one of only two places in the whole world where they nest. The other place is called Tori-shima. The islands show us how nature can thrive in quiet places.
