The islands include Hateruma, which is the southernmost inhabited island. They also include Yonaguni, which is the westernmost inhabited island. The city of Ishigaki is the main center for business and culture.

Nature is very special in this warm place. The islands have many tropical plants and mangrove forests. People grow sugarcane and pineapples in the soil.

One special plant is the Yaeyama palm. This palm only grows on Ishigaki and Iriomote islands. The islands are also a very important place for birds. Many birds live there, like the black wood pigeon. Other birds, like the ruddy turnstone, visit during the winter.

The ocean around the islands is full of life. Bright coral reefs provide homes for many sea creatures. You might see dolphins or sea turtles swimming in the water. Large fish like manta rays and whale sharks live here too. In the past, whales and dugongs were very common. The islands once had the largest population of dugongs in the Ryukyu Islands. On Aragusuku Island, there is a sacred place that honors dugongs.

History shows many names for these islands. Maps from the 1700s called them the Taipin Islands. They were also called the Majico Sima Group. The name Yaeyama means "multilayered mountains." This name is related to the native word Yaima.

Different islands have their own local languages. People on Yonaguni speak the Yonaguni language. On the other islands, people speak the Yaeyama language. Most people in the islands speak Japanese today.

Culture is a big part of life in Yaeyama. People there make traditional Okinawan textiles. On Hateruma Island, people celebrate the Mushaama Festival. This is a festival to celebrate the harvest. It happens during a time called Obon. The festival has a parade with a god named Miruku. Children join the parade too. There are also dances with lions and wooden staffs.
