It sits in the Luzon Strait, far to the north. The islands are located south of Taiwan. They lie between two bodies of water called the Bashi Channel and the Balintang Channel. These channels connect the Pacific Ocean to the South China Sea. This area is a busy sea lane for ships. The waters are also home to some of the rarest sea corals in the world. Batanes is the northernmost province in the Philippines. It is also the smallest province in land area and population.

The land in Batanes is mostly made of hills and mountains.

In fact, about 78 percent of the area is hilly or mountainous. Very little of the land is flat. Some parts are even very steep. Batan is the largest island and has the most flat land. Itbayat is another large island with rolling hills and high cliffs. These cliffs rise straight up from the sea. Sabtang is also quite rugged with steep mountains and deep canyons.

Because the land slopes so much, water drains away quickly. This means the islands do not usually have long floods.

The people of the islands are called Ivatans. Their ancestors moved to these islands 4,000 years ago.

These early people were farmers and skilled boatbuilders. They lived in strong mountain homes called idjangs. They also used gold as money. Long ago, Batanes was part of a huge sea trade network. This network used jade to trade between different lands. Today, the Ivatans still keep their unique culture alive. They are known for being strong and proud of their roots.

Many people live in traditional stone houses.

Life here can be hard because the islands face many typhoons. These are large, powerful storms that bring heavy wind and rain. Even so, the islands remain a beautiful and important place.

Batanes has a long history with many different leaders. In 1687, a British explorer named William Dampier visited the islands. He gave some of the islands new names. Later, the Spanish claimed the islands in 1783. During the 1900s, the United States also helped organize the province. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the islands in 1941. They wanted to control the small airfield near Basco. Eventually, Philippine forces liberated the islands in 1945. Today, Batanes is a peaceful province that protects its natural beauty.
