Luzon is the largest and most crowded island in the Philippines.

It sits in the northern part of the Philippine islands. This island is the main center for the nation's money and politics. Manila, the capital city, is located here. Quezon City is also on the island and is the most populous city in the country.

Luzon is a huge place with many different parts. It can mean the main land or a group of islands. This group includes the Batanes and Babuyan islands to the north. It also includes the Polillo Islands to the east. Other islands like Catanduanes, Marinduque, and Mindoro are also part of this group.

Many people live on this island. There are about 64.3 million people living in Luzon. This number is 55 percent of all the people in the Philippines. Because of this, Luzon is the 4th most populous island in the whole world. The island is also the 15th largest in the world by land area. The name Luzon might come from a Tagalog word called lusong.

A lusong is a large wooden tool used to husk rice. This tool is also called a mortar. This name helps us understand how people lived long ago.

Luzon has a very long and interesting history. Very old fossils were found in Callao Cave on the island.

These fossils belong to an extinct type of human from 50,000 to 67,000 years ago. Before the year 1000, many different groups lived in south and central Luzon. They lived in coastal areas and built important groups called polities. Some of these were named Maynila, Tondo, and Namayan. These groups traded with other places in Asia. They were led by chiefs called Datu or lords called Lakan and Rajahs. These leaders collected taxes and tributes from the people.

People in Luzon were also famous for making things to trade. In the 12th century, they traded large clay jars with Japan.

These jars were made of clay and used to store tea or wine. Local potters even marked the jars with special Baybayin letters. They wrote down which kiln made the jar. This helped people know the reputation of the pottery. Some kilns were more famous than others. Today, the Burnay jars of Ilocos are the only large clay jars from that time still made in Luzon.

These people were known as strong warriors and sailors. They traveled as far as India and the coast of Africa. Some even worked as naval muscle for the Portuguese. In the land of Siam, they were so successful that the king gave them land.

In the Sultanate of Aceh, they were even chosen to be royal guards. This shows that the people of Luzon were respected for their strength and skill across the seas.
