It sits in the Bicol Region on the eastern edge of Luzon. The island is the 12th largest in the whole country. To the west, it lies across the Maqueda Channel. The Philippine Sea borders the island to the north and east. To the south, you will find the Lagonoy Gulf.

The province includes the main island and several smaller places. These include Panay, Leyte, and the Palumbanes group of islands. The capital town is Virac, where most people live.

The land here is very rugged and mountainous. Most of the island is made of steep hills. Only a small part of the land is flat. Most people build their homes on these narrow coastal plains. The highest point is a mountain peak in Boctot. It stands over 1,000 meters above sea level.

Large mountain ranges like Obi and Cagmasoso stretch across the land. These mountains have old-growth forests that help provide water to the towns. Many towns sit right along the edge of the sea.

Catanduanes has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, people from Borneo settled on the island of Panay. Their descendants eventually moved to Catanduanes to become the first settlers. Later, Spanish explorers arrived in 1573. They called the island Isla de Cobos after the thatched huts used by local tribes. For many years, the island was part of other provinces. In 1945, it finally became its own independent province.

Remigio Socito served as the very first Provincial Governor.

Nature is incredibly busy on this island. The rainforests are home to many unique living things. You might see Philippine brown deer or flying foxes in the trees. Some animals, like the southern giant slender-tailed cloud rat, live only here or nearby. These animals are critically endangered because people hunt them. The island also has special fossils of ammonites. These are ancient sea creatures found nowhere else in Southeast Asia.

Scientists think the area could even become a UNESCO Geopark Reserve.

The sea around Catanduanes is also full of life. Marine mammals like dolphins and whales visit the eastern coasts. They usually appear between the months of March and June. The reefs hold many types of mollusks, such as octopuses and squids. The island is also famous for a plant called abacá. In 2022, the government named Catanduanes the abacá capital of the Philippines. This shows how important the island's plants are to the people living there.
