Leyte is a large island in the Philippines. It belongs to a group of islands called the Visayas.

To the north, the island of Biliran sits near Leyte. You can cross from Leyte to the island of Samar using the San Juanico Bridge. This bridge is the longest one in the Philippines. To the south, the Surigao Strait separates Leyte from Mindanao. The island is surrounded by water, like the Camotes Sea to the west. Many parts of the island are covered in thick forests and high mountains.

Most people on the island work as farmers. They grow many different things to eat and to sell. Rice and corn are the main crops grown in the soil. Farmers also grow coconuts, bananas, sugarcane, and tobacco. They also grow a plant called abaca. Fishing is another important way that people find food. In the northwest, people dig for sandstone, limestone, and manganese. Near the city of Ormoc, special plants provide geothermal electric power. This is a way to make electricity using heat from the earth.

Leyte has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, Spanish explorers called the island Tandaya. Before the Spanish arrived, different groups of people lived there. The Warays lived in the east and other groups lived in the west. In the 1700s, many Spanish-Filipino families lived on the island. They lived in towns like Tacloban, Dulag, and Tanauan. A famous story tells of a man named Datung Sumanga. He was said to have married a princess from Bohol.

World War II changed the island forever. The island was part of a large US Navy base. In October 1944, General Douglas MacArthur landed on the island.

He famously said, "I have returned." This landing helped the Philippines during the war. A huge naval battle called the Battle of Leyte Gulf also happened here. It was the largest naval battle in all of history. Today, you can visit the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park to see a statue of him.

There are many beautiful places to see on Leyte. You can visit the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park to see lakes and hot springs. There is also a beautiful, guitar-shaped lake called Lake Danao. If you like the beach, Kalanggaman Island has very white sand. The island is also the birthplace of the Tinikling dance. Sadly, a strong storm named Super Typhoon Yolanda hit the island in 2013. It destroyed many buildings and hurt many people. Now, leaders are building long walls to help protect towns from floods.
