Because deep water kept the island alone for a long time, it has its own rain forests. This makes the island a center of biodiversity. Many living things live here that cannot be found anywhere else. This includes the Mindoro deer and the Mindoro warty pig. The most famous animal is the Tamaraw. This is a small water buffalo that is endangered.

People have lived on Mindoro for a very long time. In the past, Chinese traders called the island Ma-i or Mait. They traded things like beeswax and pearls for Chinese porcelain and iron needles. Later, the Spaniards arrived. They called the island Mina de Oro, which means "gold mine." This name is likely how we got the name Mindoro. The island was also part of the Sultanate of Brunei. Many different groups have shaped its history. The indigenous people of the island are called the Mangyans.

Life on the island involves many different activities. Most people work in agriculture. They grow rice, corn, and sugarcane. They also grow fruits like bananas, coconuts, and citrus. Many people catch fish like tilapia and milkfish. Mining is another big part of the economy. Companies from the US, Canada, and Norway mine for metals like nickel and copper.

However, mining can cause problems for the environment and the local tribes. Only 5% of the original forests remain today.

Many different cultures and languages live on Mindoro. Most people speak Tagalog. The Mangyan people speak many indigenous languages. These include Iraya, Alangan, and Hanuno'o. Many people also practice Christianity. Tourism is also a big part of life for many. Visitors come to see beautiful places like Puerto Galera. They also visit Apo Reef National Park and Sabang Beach. The island is a place where nature and history meet.
