Palawan (island)

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Palawan is a very large and important island in the Philippines. It is the biggest island in the province of Palawan. The island is also the fifth-largest island in the whole country. Many people live there, with about 1,023,849 people recorded in 2024.

The island sits between two different bodies of water. Its northwest coast is along the Palawan Passage in the South China Sea. The southeast coast forms part of the northern limit of the Sulu Sea. One city and 12 municipalities are located on this island. It is a place where many tourists visit to see white sandy beaches and jungle mountains.

The land of Palawan is shaped by amazing geology. The entire length of the island forms a long mountain range. Mount Mantalingajan is the highest peak in this range. Other tall peaks include Mount Gantung and Victoria Peak.

The rocks here are very different from other parts of the Philippines. Part of the island actually came from the edge of the Chinese continental crust. This piece of land drifted south as the South China Sea opened up. This makes the northeast part of the island a special microcontinent. In the north, old limestone creates a beautiful landscape called karst terrain.

History can be found deep within the island's caves. Long ago, people lived in places like Ille Cave near New Ibajay. Scientists found ancient bones there from many different animals. These included bones from tigers, deer, and pigs.

They also found stone tools used by early humans. These fossils show that tigers once lived on the island. Some experts think the tigers might have come from nearby Borneo. These discoveries help us understand how life and people moved across the islands a long time ago.

Many different languages are spoken by the people of Palawan. More than half of the residents speak Tagalog. Some people speak Cuyonon, which was once a very common language. Others speak Palawano or Kinaray-a.

Because many people moved to the island from other places, many languages are present. This includes Maguindanao, Maranao, and Iranun. In the city of Puerto Princesa, many young people speak English. This mix of languages shows how many different groups have called Palawan home.

Palawan connects to many parts of the world through its nature and people. Its plants and animals are related to those found in Borneo. This is because Palawan is part of a group of lands called Sundaland.

The island is also a place where people look for new ways to grow. International companies look at the island for development opportunities. It remains a place where traditional ways of life meet the modern world. Whether through its unique rocks or its many languages, Palawan is a truly special place.
