geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Palawan is a very large island in the Philippines. It is the biggest island in its province. The island sits near the South China Sea. It also touches the Sulu Sea. Much of the island is covered in thick jungles and mountains. These mountains form one long row across the island. The highest peak is Mount Mantalingajan.

Palawan has many white sandy beaches. These spots draw many tourists to the island. You can find many kinds of wildlife here. Long ago, fossils of tigers and deer were found in caves. Many people live on the island. In 2024, about one million people lived there. Most people speak Tagalog. Other groups speak Cuyonon or Palawano.

The rocks on the island are very special. Some parts of the island came from the edge of China. This makes the ground different from other parts of the Philippines. In some areas, the limestone makes amazing shapes in the land. This is called karst terrain. It looks very beautiful and unique.
