It is officially called the Southwestern Tagalog Region. The name Mimaropa is a short way to say its provinces. These provinces are Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan. It is a very unique place in the country. It is the only region that does not touch any other region by land. All its neighbors are separated by water.

This region has many different parts to explore. It includes five provinces and one big city. The city of Puerto Princesa is highly urbanized and has the most people. Calapan is the regional center where many things happen.

The region also has 71 municipalities and 1,460 barangays. A barangay is a small local community. Most regional government offices are actually in Quezon City. This is because Quezon City used to be the capital for the larger Southern Tagalog area.

Learning about Mimaropa involves looking at its history. It was created on May 17, 2002. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo made this change to help the government work better. The goal was to help the provinces grow and improve services. Before this, it was part of the Southern Tagalog region. There was even a brief moment in 2005 when Palawan almost moved to a different region. However, the people there wanted to stay, so they remained part of Mimaropa.

There are many ways people earn a living here. In 2007, the economy grew very fast by 9.4 percent. This made it the fastest growing region in the country that year. Many people work in agriculture, forestry, and fishing. These jobs make up about 42.1 percent of the economy. Industry is also very important to the region. In 2006, the industry sector saw a decline because of less natural gas production in Palawan.
