Tawi-Tawi Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tawi-Tawi is a special island in the Philippines. It sits in a group of islands called the Sulu Archipelago. This island is found between the Sulu Sea and the Celebes Sea. It lies just east of the land of Borneo.

Tawi-Tawi is the main island of the Tawi-Tawi Province. It is a very important part of that area. The island makes up more than half of the province's land.

Nature shaped this island in many ways. It was made by volcanoes a long time ago. This volcanic origin gives the island an irregular shape. The land is not flat at all. Instead, it is very hilly and has many trees.

You can find white sandy beaches along the shore. Other parts of the coast are made of rocks. This makes the island look very diverse and interesting.

There are many ways to divide the land. The island is split into four municipalities. These areas are Bongao and Languyan. You will also find Panglima Sugala and Tandubas.

These four areas help manage the different parts of the island. They are the main centers for the people living there. Each area is a piece of the larger island puzzle.

Numbers help us understand how big Tawi-Tawi is. It is the 21st-largest island in the whole Philippines. Within its own island group, it is the third-largest. Basilan and Jolo are the two islands that are even bigger.

The total land area of the province is 1,087.40 square kilometers. Tawi-Tawi itself covers more than half of that amount. It is a large and significant place in the sea.

Many people call this island their home. Most of the people are Sama people. They speak languages called Sama-Bajaw.

Most people on the island also follow the Muslim faith. This shared culture helps bring the community together. Living on an island shaped by volcanoes creates a unique way of life. It is a place where the sea and the hills meet.
