The Babuyan Islands are a significant archipelago located in the Philippines.

This group of islands sits within the Luzon Strait. It is positioned north of the large island of Luzon. It is also located south of Taiwan. The archipelago consists of 24 volcanic-coralline islands. These islands are made of both volcanic rock and coral formations. The group is divided into five major islands and many smaller ones. These primary islands are Babuyan, Calayan, Dalupiri, Fuga, and Camiguin.

Geography defines how these islands are separated from other landmasses. The Babuyan Channel sits between the archipelago and Luzon. To the north, the Balintang Channel separates the islands from the province of Batanes. The islands vary in size and elevation. Calayan is the largest island in the group. The highest point in the entire archipelago is Mount Pangasun. This peak is located on Babuyan Claro. The islands represent a complex geological structure within the region.

Geology plays a major role in the formation of these islands. The eastern islands belong to the Luzon Volcanic Arc. This is a chain of volcanoes formed by tectonic activity. Several volcanoes in the group have erupted during historical times. Camiguin de Babuyanes is a volcano located on Camiguin Island. On Babuyan Island, there is the Babuyan Claro Volcano and the Smith Volcano.

Smith Volcano is also known as Mount Babuyan. Another example of volcanic growth is Didicas Island. This small island became a permanent landmass in 1952. It emerged after rising above the sea level.

Biological importance makes the Babuyan Islands a key biodiversity area. The Haribon Foundation and BirdLife International recognize them for this status. These islands have never been part of a larger landmass. Because of this isolation, they possess unique flora and fauna. Most of these species are found nowhere else on Earth. Research by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is significant. It identified at least five faunal regions in this area. This is one of the highest densities of separate faunal regions in the world.

Many rare and endangered species depend on these specific habitats. The Calayan rail is a bird found only on Calayan Island. It is a critically endangered species. On the small island of Dalupiri, the Ross' wolf snake lives. This snake is also considered critically endangered. The archipelago is also designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA). It supports populations of the Taiwan green pigeon and the Ryukyu scops-owl. Other birds include short-crested monarchs and Chinese egrets. Wintering yellow buntings also visit the area.

The marine environment around the islands is equally vital. The Babuyan Group of Islands is a rare congregation site for humpback whales. This is one of the few such sites in Southeast Asia. These whales have re-colonized the area. The islands serve as the only wintering ground for this species in the Philippines. Because of this, scientific groups are working to protect the area. They are lobbying to make the islands a national park. They also hope to include them on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Human populations are distributed across the different islands. The archipelago is administered under the province of Cagayan. Some islands belong to the municipality of Calayan. This includes Babuyan, Calayan, Camiguin, and Dalupiri. Fuga Island is under the jurisdiction of Aparri. In 2020, Calayan Island had a population of 9,648 people. Camiguin Island had 5,231 residents. Fuga Island had 1,939 people. Babuyan Island had 1,910 people. Dalupiri Island had 621 people. Even the small Barit Island had 14 people living on it.
