Northern Mindanao, also known as Region X, is a major administrative region in the Philippines.

It is located in the north-central part of Mindanao island. The region also includes the island of Camiguin. It is composed of five distinct provinces: Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Lanao del Norte. Additionally, the region contains two highly urbanized cities, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Cagayan de Oro serves as the regional center and is the largest city in the area.

The geography of Northern Mindanao is defined by its lush and diverse landscape. More than 60% of the total land area is classified as forest land. The region features high elevations and many natural springs. These physical features contribute to a climate that is cool, mild, and invigorating. Along the coast, the seas are abundant with fish and various marine products. This combination of forest and sea makes the region a biologically rich area.

The administrative structure of the region is quite complex. It consists of five provinces, two highly urbanized cities, seven component cities, 84 municipalities, and 2,022 barangays. A barangay is the smallest administrative division in the Philippines. The provinces have their own capitals, such as Malaybalay in Bukidnon and Mambajao in Camiguin. Lanao del Norte was officially transferred to Northern Mindanao in September 2001. This change occurred through Executive Order No. 36, moving it from what was then called Region XII.

History has shaped the identity and the name of the region. The name "Northern Mindanao" was coined by Americans following the establishment of colonial rule. This occurred after the defeat of Filipino revolutionaries. There have been recent proposals to change the name to the Amihanan region. This name comes from the Cebuano language, which is the lingua franca of the area. In Cebuano, Amihanan literally translates to "northern area."

The demographics of the region show a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Northern Mindanao is the 9th most populous region in the Philippines. According to the 2024 Philippine Statistics Authority Census, it is the 3rd most populous region on Mindanao. The population is over 5,178,326 people. Most inhabitants are descendants of migrants from Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental. However, the autochthonous Bukidnons and Manobos people live in the inner highlands.

Religion and language also play significant roles in the region's social fabric. Christianity is the largest religion, with 72% of the population being Roman Catholic. Protestants make up a significant minority at 14%. Islam is the second largest religion, representing 8% of the population. The primary language is a Northern Mindanao variant of Cebuano. Other native languages include Higaonon, Manobo, and Binukid. Various other languages like Hiligaynon and Ilocano are also spoken throughout the area.

The economy of Northern Mindanao is a vital part of the island's stability. It holds the position of the second largest regional economy on Mindanao. While the region remains primarily agricultural, industrial growth is booming in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. For example, Del Monte Philippines operates in Bukidnon. They use a processing plant in Cagayan de Oro to ship products to Asia-Pacific regions.

Energy production is another critical component of the regional system. The region plays a major role in powering much of Mindanao. In Iligan and Balo-i, there are several hydroelectric plants known as Agus-IV through VII. These plants use the power of moving water to generate electricity. This infrastructure supports the industrial and residential needs of the broader island. The connection between the natural water resources and the electrical grid is essential for the region's development.
