The city is part of the Soccsksargen region. It is the most populous city within that specific region. According to the 2024 census, the city has 722,059 residents. It is also the 13th-most populous city in the entire country. General Santos serves as a vital regional center for commerce and industry. It is the largest and only coastal city in the province of South Cotabato.

The city's history is tied to the movement of different groups of people. The Blaan people were the original inhabitants of this area. They used the name Dadiangas for the location. This name came from the Ziziphus spina-christi tree, which was once common there.

Later, the area saw different settlers and rulers. The Sultanate of Maguindanao and the Sultanate of Buayan both held influence in the region. During the Spanish and American colonial periods, new municipalities like Makar and Buayan were established. Makar eventually became the western part of what is now the city. Buayan formed the eastern portion of the modern city limits.

A major turning point occurred during the Commonwealth period. The National Land Settlement Administration organized a relocation effort. General Paulino Santos led this mission in 1939. He brought 62 Christian settlers from Luzon to the shores of Sarangani Bay. They arrived on a steamship named Basilan. These pioneers were mostly graduates in trade and agriculture. Their goal was to cultivate the region industrially. This influx of people changed the local population significantly. Over time, many more migrants arrived from the Visayas and Luzon regions.

The city has undergone several official name changes and status upgrades. In 1946, the Municipality of Buayan absorbed Makar and the Municipal District of Glan. In June 1954, the municipality was renamed General Santos. This was a tribute to General Paulino Santos through Act No. 1107. The city experienced an economic boom between 1963 and 1967. Large multinational firms like Dole Philippines expanded in the area during this time. On July 8, 1968, General Santos was officially converted into a city. This happened after the approval of Republic Act No. 5412. Antonio C. Acharon served as the first mayor of the new city.

Geography and climate play a large role in how the city functions. General Santos has a tropical wet and dry climate. It is known as one of the driest places in the Philippines. The city is surrounded by several different municipalities. It is bounded by Alabel to the east and Maasim to the south. Polomolok and Malungon sit to the north. T'boli is located to the west. The city is politically divided into 26 different barangays.

These barangays include areas like Lagao, Buayan, and Tambler.

The economy is built on two main pillars: agro-industry and fishing. The city has rich volcanic soil and a typhoon-free climate. This allows farmers to grow high-value crops like corn, coconut, and pineapple. They also produce asparagus, banana, rice, and exotic flowers. The city is also a major producer of livestock, including poultry and cattle. However, growing population needs are causing some agricultural land to become built-up areas.

The fishing industry is equally important to the local economy.

General Santos is famous as the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines." It is the largest producer of sashimi-grade tuna in the country. The fishing industry provides a daily catch of about 750 metric tons. This sector employs roughly 7,800 workers. The city is home to seven different tuna processing plants. The Fishport Complex in Barangay Tambler is a key facility. It features a quay and a wharf for 2,000 GT reefer carriers.

The port uses modern facilities that meet international standards for handling fish.

Cultural and social systems are diverse within the city. Many different languages are spoken by the residents. Cebuano is the most widely spoken language and is used in local media. Hiligaynon is also common among settlers from other provinces. Other languages include Blaan, T'boli, Maguindanaon, Ilocano, and Kapampangan. Religion is also diverse, though Christianity is the most common. Almost 90% of the population is Catholic. About 9% of the people follow Islam, mostly the Sunni denomination. This mix of people and industries makes the city a unique economic hub.
