It sits between many different lands and islands. To the north, it meets the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao Island. The Sangihe Islands sit to the east. To the south is the Minahasa Peninsula. The west side is bordered by northern Kalimantan in Indonesia. This sea is very big and quite deep. It covers a huge surface area.

This sea has many special shapes on its floor. It has deep sea trenches and seamounts. A seamount is like an underwater mountain. The water also has strong ocean currents. These currents move the water around. The bottom of the sea sits on an oceanic plate. This plate has a spreading center in the middle. The plate also slides under other plates to the north and south. This movement makes the ocean floor very complex.

The Celebes Sea has a very long history. It started as an ancient ocean basin. This basin formed about 42 million years ago. It was far away from any land back then. By 20 million years ago, the earth's crust moved. This movement brought the basin near volcanoes in Indonesia and the Philippines. The sea began to receive debris from those volcanoes. By 10 million years ago, the basin had docked against Eurasia. It also received coal from a young mountain on Borneo.

Many living things call this sea their home. The water is warm and clear. This helps about 580 types of reef-building corals grow there.

These reefs are some of the most diverse in the world. You can see whales and dolphins swimming in the waves. Sea turtles and manta rays live here too. Many fish like tuna and yellowfin tuna are very common. You might even see squid or sea tang.

People use the Celebes Sea in many ways today. It is an important path for regional trade. Ships use these waters to move goods from place to place. The sea is also a popular spot for fun. Many people go scuba diving in the clear water. Others enjoy luxury ocean cruising. On May 23, 2013, the Philippines and Indonesia signed an agreement. They set a boundary line for their economic zones. This helps both countries manage the sea fairly.
