Most of it sits on the Minahasa Peninsula on the island of Sulawesi. It is located south of the Philippines and southeast of Sabah, Malaysia. The province includes many small islands between the peninsula and the southern Philippines. To the east lies the Maluku Sea. The Celebes Sea and the Gorontalo region are to the west. The Gulf of Tomini sits to the southwest. The island of Miangas is the furthest north point. This island is the only place where Indonesia shares a border with the Philippines.

The land here is very active and shaped by nature. There are 41 mountains in the province. Many of these are active volcanic cones. These volcanoes are found in central Minahasa, Bolaang Mongondow, and the Sangihe Islands. The weather is tropical and changes with the winds. From November to April, west winds bring rain to the north coast. From May to October, dry south winds blow instead. The Minahasa area receives the most rain. The average air temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius. The air is often humid, at about 73.4 percent.

History shows that people lived here a long time ago. Signs of human life date back 30,000 years to a cave on Salibabu island. In the 16th century, the Portuguese and Spanish arrived in the area. The land was rich with spices, rice, and gold. This made it a place where many strong lands fought for control. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to land here in 1521. Later, the Dutch took control in the 17th century. They ruled the area for three hundred years before the Japanese arrived near World War II.

The name Minahasa has a special meaning. It comes from the words Mina-Esa or Maesa. These words mean "being one" or "uniting." This name represents the hope to unite different groups of people. These groups include the Tontemboan, Tombulu, Tonsea, and others. The province of North Sulawesi was officially created on 14 August 1959. Before that, the area was part of a larger province. In the year 2000, the Gorontalo province was separated from this land. Today, the population is growing by about 19,000 people every year.

Many people visit to see the beautiful nature and cities. Manado is the capital and the largest city. It is the main gateway and the center for business. Other important towns include Tomohon, Bitung, and Kotamobagu.
