North Sulawesi was then part of the State of East Indonesia (NIT). The NIT was later merged into the RIS. On 17 August 1950, the RIS became the Republic of Indonesia. North Sulawesi was officially created as a province on 14 August 1959. In December 2000, the Gorontalo province was separated from this territory. Today, the population is growing by about 19,000 people every year. The 2020 census recorded 2,621,923 people.
