This sea sits east of the Philippine Archipelago. It is surrounded by many different islands and landmasses. To the north lie the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The west is bordered by Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands. To the east, you will find the Mariana Islands and the Bonin Islands.

This sea is very important for the planet and its people.

The bottom of this sea is shaped by moving pieces of Earth. A large piece called the Philippine Sea Plate forms the sea floor. This plate moves and interacts with other plates. This movement creates deep sea trenches. The Mariana Trench is one of these deep spots. It even contains the deepest point on our planet.

The area also has island arcs. These are long ridges that rise up through the water to become islands. These ridges are made by plate tectonic activity. This activity also creates faults and fracture zones on the floor.

Explorers have traveled through these waters for a long time. Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to sail the Philippine Sea in 1521. He called it "Mar Filipinas" while he was near the Mariana Islands. Later, other Spanish explorers visited the area between 1522 and 1565. The sea has also seen big battles between ships. In June 1944, the Battle of the Philippine Sea took place near the Mariana Islands. It was the largest battle involving aircraft carriers in history.

This sea is a very busy home for living things. It is part of the Coral Triangle, a global center for marine life. There are over 3,212 species of fish living in these waters. You can also find 486 species of coral and 800 types of seaweed. Some special animals like the blue-spotted angelfish live only here. The sea also provides food for 120 million people. Many fishermen catch tuna, mackerel, and shrimp to sell.

These resources help many communities earn a living.

Even though the sea is huge, it faces some hard jobs. Climate change is making the ocean waters warmer. This warmth can cause corals to die. Warmer water also makes the water more acidic. This change in the water's balance is hard for corals to survive. Typhoons can also cause physical damage to the habitats. These storms are common in this part of the Western Pacific. Protecting the sea helps keep the fish and turtles safe for the future.
