Banda Sea

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Banda Sea is a large and busy part of the ocean. It sits near the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. Many hundreds of islands surround these waters. Some of these islands are part of a group called Wallacea. This region sits between Asia and Australia. It is a special place where plants and animals from both continents meet.

The sea is also part of the Coral Triangle. This area has the most diverse coral reef species in the Indo-Pacific. Because it is so special, the World Wildlife Fund calls it a priority for conservation.

Deep under the water, the sea has a very deep spot. It is called Weber Deep. This is a huge fault in the ocean floor. It is the deepest forearc basin in the world. It reaches a depth of more than 7,000 meters.

The sea floor is shaped by moving plates. The Indo-Australian plate moves north under the Banda Sea plate. This movement happens at places called trenches. There is the Timor Trough near Timor. There is also the Tanimbar Trough and the Aru Trough. This movement can fold and fault the earth to make islands like Timor.

Earthquakes happen very often in this part of the world. This happens because three tectonic plates meet here. These are the Eurasian, Pacific, and Indo-Australian plates. When these giant plates press together, the ground shakes.

History shows us that these shakes can be strong. There were large earthquakes in 1852, 1938, and 2006. Some islands in the sea are also home to active volcanoes. These include Gunung Api and Manuk in the Banda Islands.

Many different living things call the Banda Sea home. The islands have many different types of forests. Some islands have tropical moist forests. Other islands, like Timor, have dry forests. The Tanimbar, Kai, and Barat Daya islands have moist deciduous forests. These places have many plants and animals that live nowhere else. For example, there are twenty-one bird species in that small area. There are also twenty-two native mammals. These include the rare dusky pademelon and the Indonesian tomb bat.

People visit the Banda Sea for many reasons. Some travelers go to the islands to see the beautiful beaches. Others go snorkeling to see the colorful coral reefs.

You might even see huge animals in the water. People have recorded blue whales and pygmy blue whales there. You might also see Omura's whales. Travelers often use planes or ships from Ambon Island to reach these remote places. It is a beautiful and wild part of our world.
