They are named Borneo, Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. These islands sit inside the Indonesian Archipelago. Most of these islands belong to the country of Indonesia. They are famous for their rich cultures and many different living things. Geologists often use the name "Sunda" to talk about this region. This name is even more common in science than the word "Indonesia."

Scientists believe the name "Sunda" has very old roots. It might come from a Sanskrit word meaning "clean" or "white." A geologist named Reinout Willem van Bemmelen had another idea. He thought of a large volcano called Mount Sunda. This volcano once erupted near Bandung in West Java. It covered the land in white volcanic ash. This white color might be why the name was chosen. The name has been used since at least 150 AD.

Sumatra is a massive island and the sixth largest in the world.

It is very close to the Equator. This makes the weather hot and tropical. About 50 million people live on Sumatra. Many of them work in farming to grow food. The island has many rare animals like the Sumatran tiger. Sadly, much of the forest has been lost to plantations. In 1985, over half the island was forest. By 2016, only 11% remained.

Sulawesi is the 11th largest island in the world.

It sits between Borneo and the Maluku islands. This island has 11 active volcanoes. Because of its location, it also has many earthquakes. About 15 million people live here. Most people in Sulawesi are Muslim. Many people work on farms growing coffee and coconut. They also mine for metals like nickel and iron. The island has many unique animals that live nowhere else.

These islands are special because of their amazing nature.

Borneo is the largest of them all. It is the third largest island on Earth. It has big rainforests and wide river basins. You can see mother orangutans and their babies in the trees. The islands show how plants and animals change in different places. Each island has its own unique way of life. They are important parts of our planet's history.
