Most of the land is very low. It is made of coral. The highest part is only 3 meters tall. About 2,000 people live there. They live in two main villages. One is on the island of Luaniua. The other is on the island of Pelau. People speak the Ontong Java language. They grow taro, which is a root food. They also grow coconuts and go fishing. Many sea birds live here too. One kind is the black-naped tern. It uses the atoll to breed. Scientists have visited the islands to dig for old things. They found bones from a Pacific rat. This helps them learn about the people who lived there long ago.
