It is the second largest island in the whole country. It is also the most crowded island of them all. In 2021, about 161,832 people lived on Malaita. This is more than one third of the entire national population. The largest city is called Auki. It sits on the northwest coast near the Langa Langa Lagoon.

People on the island live in different ways. Some live by the sea and call themselves salt-water people. Others live in the forest and are called bush people.

Life on the island has changed many times over the years. Long ago, people from the Austronesian groups arrived there. They settled the land between 5,000 and 3,500 years ago. Later, Spanish explorers saw the island in 1568. They called it Malaita after the names they heard from local people. For a long time, the island was not well known to the rest of the world. Even after it was found, many people thought the islands might not exist for two hundred years.

In the 1800s, many people from Malaita traveled far away for work. They went to places like Fiji and Queensland, Australia. This was often a very hard job for them. Some people worked on large farms called plantations. While they were away, many learned how to read and write. They also learned about new religions. Some people even became missionaries when they returned home.

These skills helped them later when they wanted to speak up for their rights.

During the early 1900s, the British began to take control of the island. They set up a government station in Auki in 1909. This was a difficult time because there were many fights between different groups. The government tried to stop the fighting and collect taxes. In 1927, a man named William R. Bell was killed. This led to a very large and sad event called the Malaita massacre.

This event caused a lot of anger that lasted for many years.

In the 1940s, a new movement called Maasina Ruru began. This group wanted the people to have more say in their own lives. They worked together across different clans and groups. Even though the British tried to stop them, the movement stayed strong. Eventually, it led to the creation of the Malaita Council. This was the first step toward local government in the Solomon Islands.

Today, Malaita is still a very busy and lively place.
